Why these terms exist
When someone tries to open a lock without the key, it's rarely brute force against the whole door: the cylinder is targeted, since it's the smallest part and, in older locks, the most vulnerable. Manufacturers have designed cylinders that resist each known technique, which is where these names come from.
Anti-bumping
"Bumping" involves using a specially cut key that, with a sharp strike, jolts the cylinder's pins into place as if it were the real key. An anti-bumping cylinder has an internal system (extra pins, different springs) that stops that strike from moving all the pins at once.
Anti-picking
"Picking" is the classic lockpicking technique: feeling the resistance of each pin with a thin tool and setting them one by one in the correct position. An anti-picking cylinder adds false or irregularly shaped pins to make it much harder to tell the correct position by feel.
Anti-drill
If it can't be picked open, the alternative is to destroy the cylinder by drilling it. Anti-drill protection consists of hardened metal plates inside the cylinder that, ideally, break or deflect the drill bit before it reaches the mechanism.
Do you need all of this on your door?
